STWWS Travel Reporter: Bike Riding Debut in Amsterdam
Updated: Jul 25, 2020
I'm here in Amsterdam and I am so excited to be part of the See the World with SPAR travel competition. I'm currently on the hunt for cool stories and people to talk to for our reporting task for this weekend, but I had to share my first bike riding experience in Amsterdam...
I got the tram from Amsterdam Centraal as the bike ride was like... 45 minutes. I didn't fancy a solo 45-minute long bike adventure, so I decided on renting a bike upon arrival.
I did that. I thanked the man. I got on the bike and started cycling. I tried to stop. AND REALISED THERE WERE NO BRAKES!!!!!
I panicked (obviously) and jumped off the bike and haughtily took it back to the rental stand to tell them how incredibly dangerous a bike with no brakes is. The guy blinked at me and said, "The brakes are on the peddles..."
A foot brake!?!?!??! I swear I have never even heard of a foot brake before, let alone rented a bike that had the option of that being a possibility! But anyway, very embarrassing. And the foot brake is pretty nice once you get used to it... my fingers never did quite stop twitching for the hand brakes when I needed to stop, but for my first time, I think it's fine. Right?
I cycled around Amsterdamse Bos for the afternoon - I was on my way to a Goat farm to get some interviews with people who really do make a difference, growing and selling organic produce. Look out for the report coming soon and, again, thank you to everyone who has supported me on this crazy See the World with SPAR travel reporter journey!
